Human Factors in PracticeHuman involvement in accidents can be ascribed to three main factors, perception, intention and action. Human Factors Education focuses on risk identification and mitigation, thereby dovetailing with whole ship safety management systems. Understanding of the causal factors, hazardous behaviours and attitudes, significantly increases safety for yachts, clients and crew. In a high stress, high workload environment with its external commercial pressures, schedules and adverse weather exacerbated by internal operating problems the first link in the chain to snap is often the human element. Development of awareness, consistent routines and working practices makes that link more resistant to fracture. Human Factors training aims to make the human element the strongest link in the chain as our article explains. |
